Madame Soleil began as a series of Pop-Up dinners,&nbsp;Inspired by Mediterranean travels, hosted at legendary Glasgow cafés, Malacarne, Pot-Luck, and Sunny Acre. My pursuits in table dressing led me to design tablecloths that combine my skills as a chef and artist to create an ongoing series of uniquely appetising and visually satisfying tables to gather around. I launched my first three designs with a dinner at David Dale Gallery in August 2019, supported by my friends chef Aysha Abulhawa and Stephanie McSeveney. The Shape of the Cutlet was originally an artist book and performance work made with 30 kilograms of unformed Quorn, or mycoprotein, collected from the company's factory in Middlesborough. The dough-like material was used as a performance material for a communal reading. A natural form, making itself. Geometry tells you it was sculpted. A homogeneous substance pressed into a mold. It didn’t make itself to move. The dignity of a whole roasted versus material in a bowl, unformed. Suspended in liquid. Not its own juices. The shape represents reproduction. Self-conscious cubes. Made of many fibres forced together. Fleshed out to be a displaced organ. Of individual anthropomorphized paste. It’s erotic to think that it’s trying. The even skin tone of its faces. Kissing, like eating without chewing, means love. What shape was the dough when it was born? When it was part of a whole. Never an autonomous form. It didn’t have organs and it never was one. The shape on the plate stands alone. Tissue would form a seal. Would sit in its own fluids. Hold itself no matter how it was handled. To make a skin, it wears pantyhose. The slice on the plate was cut from a cylindrical form. The cross section is marbled. The edges are darker, defining exterior. The colour of body without being one. The texture is smooth, no grain, no sinew. Smoother than liver, processed, transformed. We want to consume a whole. Something with substance, a thing with integrity of its own. Equal to the sensuous feeling of the mouth and lips on skin. Squeezing the thing, juices run out. Surprising like milk from a sponge. The only way to drink it is to suck it out. We don’t remove the breast to drink the milk. It wouldn’t keep giving, if it ever lived. The egg comes out not knowing. Meat without sinew. No memories in its muscle. If we redefine flesh, if we redefine milk. The food on the plate is pleasing. Referring to a system that produces itself. A communal body of infinite reproduction. The seasoning on your tongue sings, ringing like a note in tune. The tongue knows when the tongue it eats tastes good. The hand knows if the knife slices itself. The teeth know who when the teeth hit bone. The readings will touch on the discipline of ceramics and it’s hidden symbolic labour; whether that be as sanitary objects, as a form of materialist self-help in contemporary bourgeois lifestyle trends, or its psychological, social and bodily connections to our unspoken personal, feminist, everyday lives. This project is a collaborative production of a body of work that integrates ceramic sculpture and writing. The concepts surrounding the work will develop firstly with a one-week period of material and text-based research at Glasgow Sculpture Studios. During this time, the artists will find ways to integrate ceramic processes and writing in association with the experience of working with clay, resulting in the public performance, Mineral Supplements at SWG3 on the 21st April at 8:37pm, to coincide with the sun setting. Over the summer the artists will then undertake an in-depth ceramics residency at Cass Sculpture Foundation using their wood-fired kiln. 'Extreme Unction', is a two-person performance of a series of short texts that manifest anxieties about contemporary material conditions. Bodily, environmental, political, and nutritional panic-attacks-cum-lamentations are recited alongside self-help actions that serve as therapies for the individual body. The work is staged around a purpose-built table that holds a set of bowls containing the materials used in the actions. 'Extreme Unction' performs the tension between communal problems and the individual body, the feeling of being allergic to the world and of powerlessness in the face of it. Ouellette and Osberg have worked collaboratively on special projects, such as their conjoined dissertation project, 'Blood, Sweat, and Tears: A Series of Exchanges' (2012) and 'Prospecthills', a feature length experimental collaborative film (2015). They work between writing, performance and film, between documentary and narrative fiction. They often link together strings of topics using narrative style and using a reciprocal model of call and response to negotiate their collaborations. The forms are determined by their potential as props for the body. The installation invites visitors to playfully engage with the installed environment: reclining, lying or sitting to explore the supportive possibilities of the sculptural forms. An original soundtrack of sound and speech can be heard in the background. The soundtrack cites – that is, both repeats and distances itself from – the pervasive phenomenon of mindfulness apps.
